Negative 16, and I’m not talking temperature

Today’s Rasmussen Poll shows President’s Obama at a negative 16.  That’s the lowest in his presidency.  Rasmussen boils daily polling down to one number by taking the difference between those who strongly approve and those who strongly disapprove.

Today 53 percent of those polled approve of the job President Obama is doing while 46 percent disapprove.  That doesn’t sound so bad, though he probably couldn’t win an election today against a solid opponent.

But it’s the “strong disapprovers” that make a candidate shudder.  These are the angries, the passionates, the ones likely to mobilize.  They’re more likely to take their lunch hour to protest, dig into their wallet to fund opposition, even do some door to door, face to face campaigning.

And that number has been growing like a distant, rumbling thunderstorm.  Up until June President Obama’s numbers were generally on the plus side.  They they hit zero.  Then they went into negative territory.  And stayed.

His negative 16 is a four point drop from yesterday, so it probably will get a little better in the next few days, but I’d guess the trend will be lower as people reconcile this likable man with his policies.

How low can it go? Keep in mind one year ago President Bush had a -30 rating.
