Al Gore outdoes himself, in verse
When I first heard Al Gore’s poem on the radio this week, I thought it was a joke. I thought an Al Gore sound alike was lampooning our former VP.
But I was wrong. Al is apparently serious as he continues to cling to his calling. He either believes, or at least wants us to believe, he’s a voice in the wilderness. “Change your ways,” he cries, ” or be swept away at the impending hour of judgement.”
Al reduces our expectations by saying he isn’t a poet, but then why does he publish a poem? And read it on the air to a national audience?
And what message does Harry Smith send at the end of the poem? He says he’s so glad he got to hear that in Al’s own voice. Good for Harry. I was laughing so hard by that time I don’t think I could have said anything. Notice Harry didn’t praise the poem, or offer any opinion at all. Maybe Harry’s statement was a reporter’s way of just getting Al on the record as the author, in case the poem comes up at a later time.
Either way, I enjoyed the poem immensely. I’m sure most of you (the majority of Americans who don’t believe in man-caused climate change) will enjoy it too.
