Incredible story about a woman left for dead by a drunk driver

One great things about my job is meeting great people.  The woman I met yesterday was hit by a suspected drunk driver and thrown 60 feet.  Her friend thought she was dead.

A week later she’s out of the hospital and making an incredible recovery.  Oh, and she wants to meet the suspect to tell him she’s not angry.  And there’s more…

Rattlesnake bites 4 year old boy

A rattlesnake bit a little boy and the boy was flown to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs.  I talked to the boy and his family at the hospital.  He recovered amazingly well and is just a great little guy who now has a big story to tell.

THIS IS A MUST SEE.

PLEASE WATCH: They hope their pain & agony will save lives

The victims in this one really get an important, heartfelt message across.

They shared their pain and agony with me to help save lives.  They are 2 victims out of many I’ve talked to over the years and all their stories put a lump in my throat.  I wish I could’ve shared all of them in this one story, but that would’ve filled an entire newscast.

My brother Steve and his wild pack of savages came for a visit.  We hit a few SoCo hotspots. Including Bishop’s Castle.castlefloor

It’s famous for it’s new jail for kids.

We also had the Jarman Fishing Derby.

Some hail and a lot of rain couldn’t stop the derby.

Some thought the derby went way too long, so they started the bar-b-q without the derby contestants.

Van’s day shopping… I mean fussing

So, Nicole and Stacey Kaiser (you may remember her from doing weekend weather over on 13, she’s now in Cleveland) took Van shopping yesterday.

They told me he wouldn’t stop crying and fussing.

Then they showed me this pic.  I now understand why he was crying and fussing.

Funny story

So, I got back to work on weekdays last Wednesday, after taking a couple weeks of weekdays off to spend with the new baby and family.  Well, in between working on a couple of investigative stories over the  past couple of  days, photographer Gene Cotton and myself were able to shoot, write and edit a  funny little feature.

News First 5 is doing pet stories all month long and in a couple of hours Gene and I had waiting for people to call us back and get back to us with open records request info we asked for, we put together this little story on a dog with sunglasses.

Recently Awarded the prestigious Damon Runyon Award from the Southern Colorado Press Club

On April 16th I was honored to receive the Damon Runyon Award from the Press club.  It was also a great honor to be roasted… from what I hear.

The award dinner/roast was the same day my baby boy was born.

(Yes, we’d all been up for 24 hours straight – that’s why we’re not looking at the right camera.  haha!)

So as you can imagine, I couldn’t make it to the awards dinner/roast, which is also a scholarship fundraiser.  My dad, mom and sister, Kathryn, made it and my dad accepted the award for me.

I just got the pictures emailed to me tonight.  Here’s my dad.  I guess they let him say something.  He didn’t tell me about this.

He did tell me Rob Quirk’s roast of me was darn funny.  Thanks Rob!

Here’s my dad, Rob and James Amos, press club president handing my award to my dad.

Also, in the spirit of roasting, and Damon Runyon humor, I agreed to videotape a small parody of my story on the county commissioners from last summer

In the parody, which is supposed to be funny, I’m the one videotaped not working.  The press club got a city council member, the sheriff and 2 of the commissioners to go along with it.  They shot my stuff 1 day and the rest of them at some other point.  I didn’t know how it was going to be put together, just that it was all for good fun and to help raise money for a good cause.   I guess if you can’t laugh at yourself you’re a pretty miserable person.  At least that’s what my wife tells me.  Parody/self-roasting video.
